  Submission Guidelines

Deadline for the fall issue is Saturday, August 18th at Midnight.
Submissions received after the deadline may be considered for future issues.
The fall issue is expected to be online early September.

General Guidelines

  • Email submissions to submissions@srcw.us
  • Include genre (Fiction, Flash Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, or Art and Photography in subject line.)
  • All work should be free of errors. Accepted pieces will be printed exactly as received.
  • Previously published work will be accepted if the author holds publication rights and notification of first publisher is sent with the submission.
  • Simultaneous submissions are welcome. Please contact us immediately if you need to pull your work from our website.
  • By submitting your work, you give SRCW the right to publish it on our website.
  • Spoon River Creative Writers is a small group. We have no source of income and, unfortunately, cannot afford to compensate authors for use their work.
  • Work will remain online for an undetermined amount of time. Authors retain copyright.
  • While we have no specific style or content requirements. We encourage work that is, above all, memorable.

Poetry

  • Authors may submit up to 6 poems, not to exceed 15 pages or a single extraordinarily long poem up to 30 pages. Email to inquire about longer pieces.
  • Each poem should be submitted both in text and seperately as a Word attachment. (In the case of long poems, submit the first page in text with the word "continues" at the end and the entire poem as a Word attachment.)
  • Emails should include authors name and contact information.
  • Poems should be typset in Times or Times New Roman, unless you have artistic justification for doing otherwise. (Other fonts may not transfer onto the website.)
  • All work should be single-spaced, unless there is artistic justification for doing otherwise.
  • All forms of poetry are welcome.

Fiction (Standard)

  • Authors may submit two fiction pieces at a time. Word count between 1,000 and 5,000. Email to inquire about longer pieces.
  • Work should be in Times or Times New Roman font and single spaced, unless artistically justified.
  • The first page of each work is be included in text with the author's name and contact information.
  • The entire text is to be attached as a Word file.


Flash Fiction

  • Authors may submit up to three works with wordcounts of less than 1,500.
  • The work should be included both as a Word attachment and in text with the author's contact information and name.
  • Work should be submitted in Times or Times New Roman font, single-spaced, unless otherwise justified.

Creative Nonfiction

  • We accept only creative nonfiction and will not consider memoir or work that does not contain exemplary creative elements.
  • See guidelines for Fiction (Standard).
  • Authors may submit only two Creative Nonfiction pieces at a time.

Art and Photpgraphy

  • Artists and photographers may submit images for publication.
  • Five items may be included as jpeg attachments of 50kb or less each.
  • If you work is accepted, we will request a higher quality imageif necessary.
  • The submissions committee will select one item as the cover image for each issue.
  • Email of photographed artwork should include both artist's and photographer's names and contact information when available.
  • Images of human subjects will require a signed modeling release be mailed before publication.
  • The person submitting images takes all legal responsibility for such work and retains all copyrights.
