Writer's Block

Whether you are stopped before you start writing or whether you have been writing for a while to experience this obstacle, writer's block can quickly turn an enthusiastic writer into a nonwriter.

Don't be discouraged by this feeling; it will pass. You should know you are not alone and that many writers feel pressure from myths about writing that lead to blocks.

Your first defense against being blocked is understanding the myths.

To avoid blocks, learn to observe everything in the world around you-learn to see the world as a writer.Notice speech patterns, daily routines or grooming habits of those you encounter and transfer those characteristics to your characters.

Take time to notice how shadows change as the sun comes up or the patterns water bugs make in a pond. Notice the wrinkles on your grandmother's face and speculate about each of the neighbor's tattoos.

Noticing these small details and noting them in a journal gives you a wealth of material that is yours to sift through in times of creative drought.
